Towards the end of the writing process, I switch to Word. When their long awaited iPad app arrives, it will be even more useful. Scrivener is a fantastic tool for writing academic papers, and I can’t see myself giving up on it anytime soon. I use Scrivener for my writing (which I’ve written about here), and import literature notes, data and pdfs as needed. I use mind mapping and outlining tools for brainstorming and organising my ideas (which I’ve written about here and here). I also handle the writing process pretty much the same way as I outlined a year ago. In addition to Curio, I often turn to NovaMind, which is a mind mapping app with an extensive feature set. I still think Inqscribe is great for transcription, Curio (which I’ve written about here) is great for overall management of the writing process, and iAnnotate is great for those first rounds of analysis of my overall data corpus. This is pretty identical to what I wrote in my previous post. Here’s a little post on my current set up. The way I work has changed a bit since then – some apps have gone out, some have been added, and the relationship between some of them have changed, primarily affecting my literature review work flow. Open the document and confirm that the formatting is correct. It’s been a year since I wrote this post on academic workflows. Zotero will confirm that your document has been scanned.Zotero will prompt you to select a citation style, e.g.if the "Item Name" field is blank, you must select a Citation. (I'm not sure why it always does this at least for me, the references should not be ambiguous.) Ensure that every Citation listed in the table has a corresponding Item Name. Zotero will display a table and ask you to confirm any ambiguous references. You can also select an output file, or you can accept the default file created by Zotero. Select the RTF file that you created in the previous step. Zotero will prompt you to select input and output files. In Scrivener, compile the document, using RTF as the output format.in the body of a text document, in the spot where you would like the Bibliography to appear (assuming you want the references at the end) In Scrivener, insert a citation in the body of a text document, using the one of the supplied formats, e.g.Less Recommended by Zotero as slightly less reliable: RTF Scan.Open the document in LibreOffice (free, open source Word) to finish formatting. In Zotero, click Tools -> RTF Scan -> ODF Scan and select your document to have Zotero convert the placeholders to live Zotero citations.

When you are done writing, export from Scrivener as “ODT”.Insert placeholder citations into Scrivener from Zotero (e.g., by setting your default export format to Scannable Cite and dragging from Zotero or using the zotpick tool Emiliano mentions).Top Method Recommended by Zotero for precision and reliability: ODF Scan Plugin. Two Less Easy but more Dynamic, Reliable, and Powerful Methods Caution: The connection to Zotero is no longer dynamic and footnotes/citations and the bibliography become static and simple text. Export the document along with its footnotes/citations and bibliography into Scrivener in order to further organize using import or import & split. Draft in MS Word using the Zotero Plugin for Word to create footnotes and bibliography.Use Zotero to generate a bibliography which can be copied and pasted into the Scrivener project or the compiled Word document. Manually type footnotes and citations into a Scrivener project. There is no Zotero plugin for Scrivener, and probably will not be one in the future, but there are a number of workarounds.
